Research and Exploration

At Genesilico, the journey to create an AI-powered platform for personalized breast cancer treatment began with a clear mission: to empower oncologists with tools that simplify their workflows and enhance patient care. The process started with understanding the business goals—providing oncologists with data-driven insights and streamlined tools to make better treatment decisions.

The first step was digging into the competitive landscape. Researching existing healthcare platforms revealed what was working well and, more importantly, what was missing. Armed with these insights, we designed the initial wireframes and developed early designs to gather feedback.

These initial designs were just the beginning. To create a truly meaningful product, we had to reach out to the people who would be using it—oncologists.

Understanding Users: Pain Points and Expectations

To design a meaningful solution, it was essential to analyze the pain points and expectations of oncologists, our primary users. Through interviews and research, we gained valuable insights into their daily challenges and the features they needed most to enhance their workflows and patient care.

Design Approach

Goals:

  • Streamline the process for filling out and submitting test requisitions.

  • Reduce errors and incomplete submissions.

  • Provide clarity and guidance for users at every step.

Features:

  • Dynamic Fields: Users often encountered situations where the exact option they needed was not available in a dropdown menu, leading to incomplete or incorrect submissions. To address this, I designed a select-and-type functionality for dropdowns. If users don’t find the appropriate option in the list, they can type a custom value directly into the field. This input is then captured as a variable and stored for future use or reference.

  • Progress Indicator: Added to inform users about their progress and the remaining steps.

  • Validation and Feedback: Immediate validation for mandatory fields with tooltips or error messages.

My Design Process

Collaboration:

To achieve our goal, I worked closely with a multidisciplinary team:

  • Bioinformatics Specialists: They provided insights into the complex data and functionalities needed for the platform. Their expertise ensured that the design aligned with the scientific rigor required for accurate data analysis.

  • Oncologists and medical researchers: These users were critical in providing feedback on the usability of the interface. Their input guided the design to meet the practical needs of professionals in the medical field.

  • Software Developers: I collaborated with developers to ensure that the design was technically feasible and that the user interface was implemented as envisioned. This involved regular discussions to address any technical constraints and make necessary adjustments.

  • Project Managers: They facilitated communication across the team, ensuring that the project stayed on track and met the necessary deadlines.

What I've Learned

  1. Gaining Insight into Healthcare Systems: Working on this project at Genesilico provided valuable insights into the complex ecosystem of healthcare systems, particularly in the context of personalized medicine and oncology workflows. It deepened my understanding of how critical processes like test requisitions, clinical trials, and data-driven decision-making function to improve patient care and outcomes.

  2. The Crucial Role of Accessibility: Accessibility in healthcare technology is non-negotiable. Designing for diverse users, including oncologists, Genetic Counselor, and patients, requires a focus on inclusivity and ease of use. This project emphasized the importance of creating solutions that are intuitive, reliable, and adaptable to different user needs.

  3. Simplicity is Key: In healthcare, where accuracy and speed are paramount, simplicity in design is invaluable. Streamlined workflows, clear navigation, and intuitive interfaces led to more efficient and effective outcomes, proving that less is often more.

  4. The Value of User Research and Feedback: Conducting stakeholder interviews and usability testing was pivotal to the success of this project. Engaging with oncologists and lab technicians provided firsthand insights into their pain points and expectations, allowing me to iterate and validate designs effectively.

  5. The Future of Health Tech: This project illuminated how rapidly health tech is evolving and the critical role users play in shaping these tools. Whether it's enabling oncologists to make data-driven decisions or simplifying patient interactions with technology, this experience sparked a deeper passion in me to explore the intersection of technology and healthcare further.
